Bear rescued from an abandoned zoo found its new home

Animals are frequently left behind and uncared for in abandoned zoos, as was the case with Yampil, an Asiatic Black Bear discovered by Ukrainian soldiers in an abandoned zoo in Ukraine. Yampil was rescued and eventually arrived in Belgium, where he was cared for by a wildlife charity.

When Yampil was found, he was scared and injured as an exploding shell had concussed him during the occurring war in Ukraine. “Bears can often suffer mental health problems after going through a traumatic experience, and so it was really important we understood Yampil and what to expect from him,” said Garry Curran, the head of carnivores at Five Sister Zoo. Curran also mentioned when he first saw Yampil arrive at his new home, “Although he appeared a little nervous at first, he seems to have adapted surprisingly well and didn’t actually show any concerning stress-related behaviours. He seems to be a calm and gentle individual, which was reassuring for all of us”.

With Five Sisters Zoo currently raising funds to finish their construction on Yampil's permanent enclosure, they have currently raised £60,000. With their best efforts, they aim to raise £200,000, which will all go towards helping Yampil recover and revive in his new enclosure.
