Following almost two and a half years of being required to wear a mask outdoors, Hong Kong’s government has lifted its mask mandate, seeing an end to one of the world’s longest-running Covid restrictions. The mandate, starting in July 2020 – issued that the people of Hong Kong had to wear a mask in any public area, and if they did not comply, could be fined up to HK$5,000.

Many residents took to social media to express their excitement and relief that the days of wearing masks had finally come to an end once the announcement was made on Tuesday, February 28th. Even so, many still were seen wearing masks when going outside on Wednesday, according to local media. But by the second day, The Post also noted a higher proportion of shoppers without face coverings in Causeway Bay, a major shopping district.

The lift of the mandate also saw an increase in sales of cosmetic products and treatments, with lipsticks being a heavily sought-after commodity. The number of spa treatment bookings has also doubled in recent weeks, with people now wanting to look after their appearance before removing masks. A staff member at a Shiseido store said some lipstick shades had run out of stock with the increase in demand.

Masks are still being worn across other countries in Asia, for example, South Korea still requires them to be worn in public transport, hospitals and pharmacies. While others such as Japan are looking to ease their mask-wearing guidelines, placing a deadline for the 13th of March.

Having got the virus under control and no sign of a rebound in store, Hong Kong’s Chief Executive John Lee stated in a news briefing that “With the removal of the mandate, Hong Kong will return to normalcy”. Adding to this thought, Health Secretary Lo Mau-chung said “We have now removed all epidemic restrictions. I’m looking forward to seeing a smile on everyone’s face now”.
