Avatar 2 surpasses $2 billion in global ticket sales

‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ was a long-awaited film globally, a 12-year wait to be exact. In 2006, three years before the release of the first movie, Cameron had mentioned that there would be sequels if ‘Avatar’ became a hit. Then in 2010, with the film dominating the film industry, he confirmed there indeed would be a sequel. The Avatar series was said to be a trilogy with Cameron planning to shoot them back to back, and soon after, he confirmed there would be four sequels. But soon after, he said that the fourth and fifth sequels might not go ahead if Avatar 2 didn’t make enough sales. The movie was originally planned for a 2014 release, but because of the technological advancements required for the production of Avatar 2, it made the project endure delays of approximately eight years, along with the sudden occurrence of the Covid-19 pandemic. As the title suggests, Avatar 2 is largely set in and around water, and this proves to be a huge factor in the movie's production since Cameron had to develop technology to make the motion capture underwater a success.

After just six weeks of release, the blockbuster sequel surpassed $2 billion in global ticket sales, becoming the sixth film in history and the first in the Covid-19 pandemic times to cross this milestone, joining "Avatar" and "Titanic" as well as "Avengers: Endgame", "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", "Avengers: Infinity War". Now, Cameron is the only director responsible for three of the six highest-grossing movies of all time that crossed $2 billion. Repeat customers across all ages and demographics have propelled ticket sales to stratospheric heights, leading us to wonder if the next sequel will also reach such a high success rate too.
