World’s first floating city makes waves
Edited by Rachel Heung
With global warming causing a rise in sea levels, it’s no surprise that cities may turn into Atlantis in the future. One city at risk of this is the Maldives, where 80% of its land is less than a metre above sea level. Fortunately, located 10 minutes away from its capital Male, construction for a floating city is underway.
The Maldives Floating City (MFC) is the world’s first floating city; It consists of hotels, shops, restaurants, and can house up to 20,000 people. Modeled after a ‘brain coral’, Maldives has had a history of a strong relationship with the sea, so it was fitting for the city to be sealife themed. The city also bans all cars, only allowing biking and soundless electric scooters.
While being modeled after coral, the MFC also supports the growth of coral reefs. Artificial coral banks will be attached underneath the city, which will support the growth of natural coral reefs. These coral reefs are also said to be able to provide a natural wave (reduction) breaker, which in combination with the city’s grid-like infrastructure will provide stability.
The MFC is predicted to finish construction in 2027. With such fishtisticated infrasharkture, it’s bound to be jawsome.”
