Only 15% of the 1,247 doctors lost in Hong Kong during the timespan of April 2020 to the end of 2022 were due to retirement. More than 200 medically qualified doctors and students in the UK went to the event Hong Kong’s Hospital Authority held on the weekends, hoping to bring doctors with non-local training experiences to Hong Kong in order to increase the number of doctors.

Around two-thirds of the 100 doctors they ended up bringing back were UK citizens and other countries like Australia. Hong Kong has also tried to recruit doctors from other countries in recent years, making rules to allow doctors from other countries to work in the city. They have also been setting up job fairs in the UK, Australia and other countries recently.

This step not only benefits but also positively impacts our community as it not only provides more doctors for the patients and hospitals in Hong Kong for people in need, but it also shows more diversity among Hong Kong citizens or the city in general with people from other countries. It also benefits the doctors leaving their home country to come work in Hong Kong, as they get a different work experience and many opportunities to learn in a new environment.

Hailey Chung

Hi! I’m Hailey, and this is my first year to be a part of Project Odyssey. I signed up for Project Odyssey because I thought it would be a fun and interesting experience, as I don’t have that much knowledge in writing newspaper stories and would love to practice more. I hope to improve my writing skills and learn more about writing articles this year, especially ones with positive energy! Some of my hobbies outside of school include badminton, reading, writing, swimming and spending quality time with my family and friends.
