Jujutsu Kaisen, what is it?

Jujutsu Kaisen is a Japanese animation and manga illustrated by Gege Akutami. Originally published on July 4th, 2018, the manga novel and anime series Jujutsu Kaisen has risen to the monthly top 20 adult graphic novels list on North America NPD Bookscan since January 2021. Jujutsu Kaisen is also the fifth best-selling manga series in 2020, selling over 6,702,736 copies.

For those who don’t know, Jujutsu Kaisen is a fictional work inspired by Japanese mythology in the action and thriller genre. However, what makes Jujutsu Kaisen so popular? The series follows the main character, Yuji Itadori, a sixteen-year-old male who faces conflict between upholding his grandfather's dying wish and dealing with a mysterious cursed relic that was gifted to him. The main conflict begins with Yuji Itadori having ingested a cursed relic which allowed a powerful cursed demon named Ryomen Sukuna inside his body; the driving force of this series is to kill the demon once he is completely sealed within Yuji Itadori, which can be only be done by consuming all 20 relics. 

Within the animated adaptation produced by studio MAPPA, the show has risen to fame, ranking second in the anime category of the Yahoo! Japan search awards in 2021. During the same year, Jujutsu Kaisen was the second most discussed and featured TV show globally on Twitter, surpassing Squid Game. The series placed nineteenth on the annual Twitter Japan’s Trend Award in 2021, based on social media’s top trending topics of the year. 

Netizens globally have agreed that Jujutsu Kaisen is a heartwarming and emotionally touching story, especially in moments of angst and downfall. Of course, its fame doesn’t only come from the gruelling plot and never-ending waves of merchandise, but through the controversial opinions readers have on the series that cause incredible amounts of discourse on social media.
