On the 28th of January, 22-year-old Jannik Sinner overcame a two-set deficit to defeat Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in a gripping game to take home the men’s Australian Open title. He pulled through in the last three sets and won 3-6 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-3. He has become the youngest male player to win the Australian Open since Novak Djokovic in 2008 and the third Italian man ever to win a grand slam. Even more impressive is that this is Sinner’s first grand slam final!

Sinner has always been praised as one of tennis’ most talented young players, but his rise since the latter stages of last season has vaulted him into the higher ranks of the sport. He was ranked as world No. 4 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) on the 2nd of October 2023, making him the highest-ranked Italian male player in history.

As a child, he was active in tennis, skiing and football. But after winning a national championship in skiing at eight years old, Sinner switched his focus to tennis at the age of 13. He moved to Bordighera, a town in Italy, to train with Riccardo Piatti, who has coached many top players such as Novak Djokovic and Ivan Ljubičić.

Being one of the sport's brightest prospects, this has to be only the beginning of Sinner’s success.
