Tetris!

Tetris is a game that has been alive for decades. Your mom’s heard it, your teacher’s heard it, and even your cat’s heard it. Well, not really, but you get the point. Tetris is a game that has taken the world by storm since its release in 1984. Invented by Alexey Pajitnov, a Soviet computer programmer, it was inspired by his beloved puzzle game, Pentominos.

Tetris is played on a 10x20 cell board and accelerates as you progress. The game aims to clear as many rows as possible by rotating and dropping the fluorescent geometric blocks, known as Tetriminos. There are seven Tetriminos, each made up of four squares. This explains where the game’s name comes from. The name Tetris is a combination of the Greek word “tetra”, which means four, and Pajitnov’s favourite sport, Tennis.

To beat the game or “kill screen”, you must reach a max score of 999999. This occurs when the blocks fall so quickly that the game can’t continue. This was previously made possible with AI and bots but never by a human. Until recently, a 13-year-old American teenager, Willis Gibson, who goes by Blue Scuti online, became the first person to do so. Once he hit 999999, the game froze, and Willis was shocked at what he had just achieved. “Oh my God! Yes! I’m going to pass out. I can’t feel my hands,” Willis shrieked in disbelief. Willis said this win was dedicated to his late father, Adam, who passed last month.

To reach such a feat, Willis had to practice his Tetris skills 20 hours daily on his cathode-ray tube television. However, this paid off, as Willis was congratulated by Tetris creator Pajitnov himself! “It’s never been done by a human before. It’s something that everyone thought was impossible until a couple of years ago,” said Vince Clemente, the Classic Tetris World Championship president.
