Beep boop. I’m not a computer. Or am I? AI that lets you “chat” with characters exists now

(Vignesh, 2023)

With AI getting more and more advanced, it’s no surprise that it’s becoming increasingly useful for everyday life. For example, AI can do art, paraphrase, etc. Where's the line that splits the capabilities of AI from humans? Let me introduce you to an AI that doesn’t care about that line called Character.AI, it mimics chatting like any real or fictional character.

Character.AI’s programming is based on neutral language models. You write the dialogue for your side, and the AI generates the dialogue as the chosen mimicked character based on its given sample texts of said character, giving you the impression that you are conversing with the character. You also have the option to shift through multiple different possible responses from the AI, so you can choose the response that you’d like to reply to.

Unfortunately, there are limits to the AI’s chatting capabilities. For example, the AI has a limit to how much it remembers, and if prompted to remember previous chat history it will likely make up information. It also has to work with the limited sample text it's given, so it can’t search for more specific information such as story lore for fictional characters.

Though the AI’s dialogue isn’t perfect, it can serve as inspiration to imagine what characters may say. (A)I’d say give it a go, and see what kind of perspectives the AI has on your questions.
