(Hybe, 2022)

The Mnet Asian Music Awards, more widely known as MAMA, has been going on since 1999 in Seoul, being aired on Mnet, and now airing internationally online beyond Asia. MAMA is a South Korean major music awards ceremony presented annually by the company CJ E&M and is usually hosted in South Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong. When it was first held in South Korea, the majority of the awards were given to K-pop artists, but now there are also other Asian or Non-Asian artists that win in various award categories.

Since 2017, BTS has been widely known worldwide for their music and became a global phenomenon. In the MAMA awards hosted in Osaka Japan this year from November 29-30th, BTS had already won 6 of the daesangs, which are the main awards offered in MAMA. BTS won all 3 daesangs which are Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, and Worldwide Icon of the Year. But this year, BTS was given the special “MAMA Platinum” award, a new award given to artists who have won all four Daesangs at once for MAMA. Amazingly, they had achieved an all-kill for the main daesangs for three consecutive years in 2019, 2022, and 2021, and now for the fourth year too. Right after the win, Twitter erupted with reactions and congratulatory messages from all over the world. The fans, also known as ARMYs, were ecstatic to see BTS receive a lifetime achievement award from MAMA, furthermore establishing their title as “legends”.
